The BRSA Released Weekly Banking Data: Increase in Loans and Deposits
According to the data published today by the Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency (BRSA), there has been a noticeable increase in many categories within the banking sector since the beginning of the year, including commercial and other loans, personal credit cards, and consumer loans.
Commercial and other loans reached 11 trillion 590.60 billion TL, up from 11 trillion 584.28 billion TL the previous week and significantly higher than the 8 trillion 961.58 billion TL at the beginning of the year. The volume of personal credit cards also rose to 1 trillion 676.52 billion TL, compared to 1 trillion 154.92 billion TL recorded at the start of the year.
Consumer loans showed a slight decrease, falling to 1 trillion 893.52 billion TL, though this is still a significant increase from 1 trillion 513.75 billion TL at the beginning of the year. Currency-protected TL deposits and participation accounts were recorded at 1 trillion 250.24 billion TL. Considering that these types of accounts were at a level of 2 trillion 626.35 billion TL at the beginning of the year, a downward trend in this area has been observed.
Total loans in the banking system increased to 15 trillion 160.65 billion TL, whereas this figure was 11 trillion 630.25 billion TL at the start of the year. In the same period, banking system deposits reached 18 trillion 326 billion TL, marking a significant rise compared to 14 trillion 843.08 billion TL at the beginning of the year.
The net general position in foreign currency decreased to 65.09 billion TL. Last week, this amount was 70.59 billion TL, while it was recorded at 91.43 billion TL at the start of the year. There is an open position of 504.68 billion TL in the on-balance sheet foreign currency position of the banking sector. This figure was -1 trillion 197.88 billion TL at the beginning of the year, indicating significant improvement.
The total securities of the banking sector increased to 5 trillion 86.09 billion TL compared to the previous week, up from 3 trillion 963.31 billion TL at the beginning of the year. The amount of non-performing loans also rose to 280.29 billion TL, compared to 191.43 billion TL recorded at the beginning of the year.
The total of consumer loans and individual credit cards in the banking sector increased from 3 trillion 564.56 billion TL last week to 3 trillion 570.04 billion TL. This figure represents a significant increase compared to 2 trillion 668.67 billion TL at the start of the year.
Overall, these data indicate strong growth in loans and deposits within the banking sector. The increase in total securities and loan volumes suggests that the sector continues to show an expanding trend. However, it is also evident that there are challenges, such as the rise in non-performing loans and the decrease in currency-protected deposits.
