The company's 2022 Sustainability Report was awarded the Gold Award in the "Design/Graphics: Sustainability Report: Americas & Europe" category at the 2024 ARC Awards, one of the most prestigious communication awards in the steel industry.
“LIFE POSITIVE, CARBON NEUTRAL” Commenting on the report published under the slogan “Life Positive, Carbon Neutral,” Hakan Kocaer, Chairman of Kocaer Çelik (IS:KCAER), stated that they achieved remarkable successes with carbon-neutral targets in environmental, social, and governance areas by further enhancing their sustainability strategy last year.
Highlighting that one-third of the energy consumed by the company is obtained from the rooftop Solar Power Plant (SPP) with an installed capacity of 9.2 Megawatts (MW) located at its production facilities in Aliağa, İzmir, Hakan Kocaer noted that drilling works are ongoing for a 24 MW geothermal power plant project initiated in Kuyucak, Aydın, by Kocaer Enerji A.Ş., a subsidiary of Kocaer Çelik.
ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL TRANSFORMATION With the commissioning of geothermal investment, it is planned that the electrical needs of production facilities will be met entirely from renewable sources, and the sale of surplus energy is targeted, Kocaer added:
“In our strategies, we aim to achieve carbon neutrality with the projects we have implemented and planned on our sustainability journey for the future. In this context, while developing environmentally friendly and cost-effective processes with our resource efficiency, energy conservation, and renewable energy investments; we are preventing losses and ensuring business continuity with our projects that focus on digital transformation, high automation, and robotics. Our sustainable business strategies not only enhance our competitiveness and strengthen customer loyalty but also reinforce investor confidence. Additionally, we create new business opportunities through our waste management and water efficiency projects in line with innovation and circular economy principles, taking steps to increase our profitability in the long term. With all these projects, we aim to achieve a reduction in Scope 2 emissions by 2030, and to achieve net-zero Scope 1 and Scope 3 emissions by 2050. Through projects aimed at efficient use of natural resources, we target a 17% reduction in our water discharge amount and water use per unit production based on the year 2023. We processed a total of 9,125 liters of organic waste through a compost machine, resulting in an annual yield of 2,740 liters of compost (organic fertilizer). At the same time, we have initiated our food project for street animals as an additional step to address food waste before and after meals. As an important aspect of our environmental performance, we have adopted zero waste management and circular economy principles. We are also developing our water and energy efficiency projects within this framework.”
Hakan Kocaer further added that the "Double Materiality" analysis has been conducted for the first time in the 2023 Sustainability Report, stating, “As Kocaer Çelik, we place great importance on measuring not only the financial values we create but also the environmental and social impacts arising from all our activities and systematically managing them. We see and acknowledge concepts such as sustainability, circular economy, and green transformation as indispensable elements of our competitive structure.”
