Samsung's US user data stolen

Samsung announced that some user data may have been stolen in the cyber attack on its US servers. South Korea-based technology giant Samsung announced that it was subject to a cyber attack in July and that some user data may have been stolen in the attack that affected its servers in the US. Following this incident, Samsung wrote a letter to its customers regarding the cyber attack and the stolen data. The letter in question reads, “Dear customers, security is our top priority at Samsung. We are reaching out to you to inform you that Samsung recently discovered a cybersecurity breach that affected your information. In late July, an unauthorized third party obtained some information from Samsung’s US servers. The attack was discovered on August 4th. We have taken the necessary measures to make the affected systems more secure and are cooperating with cybersecurity and law enforcement authorities.” It was stated that data such as customer credit card numbers or social security numbers were not damaged in the attack on Samsung’s US servers, but instead data such as Samsung customers’ names, contact information, demographic information, dates of birth, and product purchases may have been stolen. The company said that it had taken the necessary precautions and that no devices were at risk; but warned that users should be wary of suspicious emails and activity. Samsung spokesman Chris Langlois said the data breach included demographic data and customer information used for marketing and advertising, but did not comment on the details of the information compromised. The spokesman did not say how many customers were affected or why it took Samsung more than a month to notify customers. "While the investigation is ongoing, we wanted to make our customers aware of this because we understand how important their privacy is," Langlois said.
