UK and German Chancellors Discuss Energy Crisis
British Prime Minister Liz Truss and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz discussed energy challenges and stressed the importance of energy independence in a phone call. A spokesperson from Number 10, Prime Minister’s Residence, said in a statement regarding the leaders’ phone call that the conversation discussed the energy challenges facing the UK and its European partners as a result of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s illegal war. The statement stressed that both leaders agreed on the importance of flexibility and independence in energy, and said: “Prime Minister Truss underlined the importance of preserving democracy and freedom in Europe and protecting countries left defenseless by Russia’s economic blackmail.” It was also noted that Truss stated that the two countries were important economic partners and that she was keen to expand defense cooperation between the UK and Germany.
