The U.S. Needs Canada's Collaboration in Steel and Aluminum Construction
U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick stated that the U.S. needs Canada’s permission for steel and aluminum production for national security purposes. Speaking on Bloomberg TV, Lutnick described Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on sports equipment as "untimely."
Despite these issues, Lutnick confirmed that the USMCA pact, which allows tariff-free trade between countries as long as products meet sufficient U.S. content or are domestically produced, is still in effect. He also mentioned that President Donald Trump will provide details on trade balancing on April 2. During the interview, Lutnick criticized the European Union's response to the U.S. as "disrespectful" and expressed hope that China would reduce its production of fentanyl components. He also addressed restrictions on U.S. vehicle sales in South Korea and Japan, and noted that everything is going smoothly regarding the U.S. border situation.
