Zero-Covid protests flare up in China

Protests against China’s zero-Covid policy have spread to multiple cities. On Sunday, protesters and police clashed in Shanghai. Protests against China’s strict COVID restrictions flared up for a third day and have spread to several cities. Video from the scene in Shanghai showed police seizing and taking away a protester. The protests have added to frustration with President Xi Jinping’s signature zero-Covid policy. Protesters also took to the streets in the cities of Wuhan and Chengdu on Sunday. Students at several university campuses across China gathered to demonstrate over the weekend, while small gatherings were held in Beijing to try to calm the protests. The protests followed a deadly apartment fire in the country’s far west on Thursday, where millions of people are under some of the country’s longest lockdowns and are banned from leaving their homes for up to 100 days.
