In 2023, the Industrial Sector's Final Energy Consumption Reached a Total of 1,706,480 Terajoules
According to the results of the Research on Final Energy Consumption in the Industrial Sector, the total final energy consumption in the industrial sector in 2023 was 1 million 706 thousand 480 terajoules. By subsectors, the largest share in final energy consumption was held by the "manufacturing of other non-metallic mineral products" sector, with 28.6%. This was followed by the "basic metal industry" at 22.4%, the "food products manufacturing" sector at 9.4%, and the "textile products manufacturing" sector at 7.5%. The share of the "manufacturing of chemicals and chemical products" in final energy consumption was 7.0%, while the "construction" sector accounted for 4.4%.
According to the announcement made by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), electricity was the most consumed energy source, totaling 475 thousand 532 terajoules. In terms of the shares of energy sources in the industrial sector, electricity accounted for 27.9%, solid fossil fuels for 24.6%, natural gas for 23.4%, and petroleum products for 12.6%, making them the most consumed energy sources.
In the "manufacturing of other non-metallic mineral products" sector, where energy consumption was highest among subsectors, the most consumed energy source was petroleum products, at 28.6%. This sector was followed by solid fossil fuels at 28.0%, natural gas at 19.2%, and electricity at 12.8%.
The Industrial Sector Final Energy Consumption Statistics Survey was conducted by the Turkish Statistical Institute through a computer-assisted web interview method applied to a sample of 24,626 enterprises, representing the entire sector, including the manufacturing industry and construction sector. The survey compiled information on the energy sources definitively consumed by enterprises in the reference year of 2023.
With this bulletin, statistics on the sectoral consumption of energy products in the manufacturing industry and construction sector are being presented for the first time. Statistics regarding final energy consumption are available in the tables in the annex to the bulletin, detailed in terajoules and original units.
