How Did Borsa Istanbul Kick Off the Week? Which Stocks Stood Out at Opening?

The BIST 100 index started the week at 9,419.42 points, up by 0.32%.

After a slightly positive opening, the BIST 100 began testing below 9,350 points with a half-point decline in the initial trades. Despite a 0.33% decrease on Friday during last week's trades, the index closed the week up by 2.23%. Although there was a partial decrease in the optimistic mood that formed the previous week, especially the banking sector contributed significantly to the index with an increase of over 6%.

This week, the key development that the domestic market will be pricing in is the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey's (CBRT) interest rate decision. The expectation is that the CBRT will keep the interest rate stable at 50%. However, the decision text will be extremely important for investors who received signals about a potential rate cut in December in the last inflation report.

While a selling trend dominates the first trades on Borsa Istanbul, sector indices such as small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), cement, and information technology have started the day with the highest increases. Sectors such as food, construction, and communication have started the week on a negative note. Banks saw a half-point decrease in the first hour, while the decline in the holding sector approached 1%.

Looking at the overall Borsa Istanbul, CMBTN, KSTUR, and MRSHL were observed as the stocks with the highest increases at the opening. CEOEM, MMCAS, and DMSAS were recorded as the stocks with the most declines.

In the domestic foreign exchange market, the dollar/TL opened the week at 34.46 with a 0.15% increase, the euro/TL decreased by 0.4% to 36.3, and gram gold traded at a level of 2,864 TL with an increase close to 1%.

Abroad, Asian markets started the week with a mixed outlook. Prior to the market opening, positive momentum was seen among European futures indices, except for CAC 40 and FTSE 100, while U.S. futures also showed a buyer-weighted movement.
