New York jury finds Trump 'liable'
In a New York court, a jury has ruled that former US President Donald Trump is "liable" for sexual assault in a case in which he was accused of rape and insult by a woman named "E. Jean Carroll." After a week of hearings in Manhattan Federal Court, the 9-person jury, 3 of whom are women, reached a decision in Carroll's favor today. After approximately 2.5 hours of deliberation, the jury found Trump liable for "sexual abuse," "battery," and "insult" in the civil lawsuit filed by Carroll. The verdict rejected Trump's claim that he raped Carroll. The jury announced that Trump must pay Carroll $2 million for sexual assault and assault, and $3 million for defamation, totaling $5 million in damages. Trump: "This verdict is disgraceful" Minutes after the verdict was announced, Trump shared the following on his social media account: "I have no idea who this woman is. This verdict is disgraceful, it is the continuation of the greatest witch hunt of all time." Magazine writer E. Jean Carroll publicly stated in 2019 that Trump sexually assaulted and raped her in a dressing room at Bergdorf Goodman in New York in the spring of 1996. Trump denied the allegations, saying, "She's not my type."
