Sony has sold over 25 million PS5s
Sony sold 3.3 million PlayStation 5s in the second quarter. That’s flat compared to the same period a year ago, and the company announced that it has sold 25 million PS5s since the PS5 launched. Despite selling the same number of PS5s compared to the previous fiscal year, a price increase for the PS5 earlier this year pushed revenues up 12 percent from the previous year to $4.92 billion. According to its latest earnings report, Sony sold 3.3 million PlayStation 5s in the second quarter, matching the success it achieved last year. The company brought the total number of consoles sold since the PS5 launch to 25 million. Despite selling the same number of PS5s compared to the previous fiscal year, a price increase for the PS5 earlier this year pushed revenues up 12 percent from the previous year to $4.92 billion. Its fiscal 2022 goal of 18 million PS5s sold will not be met by its current quarter’s performance. At this point in the fiscal year, which ended on March 31, sales are at 5.7 million, which is about the same as 2021. However, profits have fallen by 49 percent due to the company’s recent acquisition of Bungie and higher game development costs. Sony sold 11.5 million consoles in 2018, so it’s likely that 2022 sales will be close to that number. But a lot will depend on how well the company does over the holidays and whether it can meet demand. The PS5 has struggled since its launch due to the pandemic and other issues. As supply chain issues improve, Sony claimed in May that it could finally ramp up production to meet PS5 demand. Software sales, meanwhile, have fallen from 76.4 million units this time last year to 62.5 million units today. PlayStation Plus subscribers have fallen for the second quarter in a row.
