Statement from Minister Şimşek regarding rent increases

Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek announced that the housing supply will be increased to prevent price increases in rents, new social housing projects will be developed to compensate for losses in the housing stock caused by the earthquake, and low-income citizens' access to housing will be increased. Şimşek answered CHP Artvin Deputy Uğur Bayraktutan's written question regarding rent increases. Şimşek stated that the "real rent" index, which was 475.07 in November 2018, reached 1888.02 in November 2023, and that the increase rate in the 2018-2023 period was 297.42 percent. Şimşek stated that the monthly rent increase rate, which was 9.52 percent in September 2023, decreased to 7.91 percent in October, 5.97 percent in November and 4.48 percent in December, and noted: "In the medium term, the housing supply will be increased in order to combat inflation and prevent price increases in rents, new social housing projects will be developed to compensate for losses in the housing stock caused by the earthquake, and low-income citizens' access to housing will be increased."
